Answers, Part III

OK, here are the answers to Part III.

By the way, I would love to have you send YOUR top ten songs from these, or any category. Consider it being tagged or something.

1. Guns N' Roses -- Used to Love Her. (Kel, I get butch points for using this. If this confuses you, got to www.whothrewthatham.blogspot.com)
2. Terry Clark -- Better Things to Do.
3. Lorrie Morgan, again -- Except for Monday. I love her stuff.
4. Gloria Gaynor -- I Will Survive. If you didn't know this one, you're straight, young, AND sheltered.
5. Kelly Clarkson -- Since U Been Gone. If you didn't know this one, get out to a gay bar. Or any dance club. You've been sitting at home too long.
6. Bruce Springsteen -- Better Days. I had to get him in here somehow.
7. Travis Tritt -- Here's a Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares). I think this is the best song ever written about those who break up with you, and then try to come back. And parentheses.
8. Eurythmics -- Thorn in My Side.
9. Mary Chapin Carpenter -- Almost Home. She's a far better country/rock cross-over ARTIST than Shania Twain, but gets buried because her navel isn't as cute. You probably heard Passionate Kisses on Top 40 radio, but didn't know it was her. And she sang Down at the Twist and Shout at the Superbowl.
10. Charles Strouse (music) and Martin Charnin (lyrics). Tomorrow. Yes, these are the guys who brought you the musical Annie. Always a chance to learn here at This is NOT Medical Advice.

Lost Lyrics of Love, Part III

OK - here we go with:

How you feel...when you are getting over it.

I'm running out of bitterness, since last night I got to go out with the person I missed on Valentine's day. I've put the answers to Part II at the end, so if you still want to check your knowledge, skip to the LLoL Part II blog.

1)...I had to put her, six feet under
and I can still hear her complain...

2)...I could wash my car in the rain
Change my new guitar strings
Mow the yard just the same as I did yesterday
I don't need to waste my time crying over you...

3)You look surprised, you didn't think you'd see me
Kicking up my heels, painting up this town...

4)At first I was afraid, I was petrified...
(Yes, it's a gimme, but it has to be here)

5)...How can I put it? You put me on
I even fell for that stupid love song...

6)...I'm tired of waitin' for tomorrow to come
Or that train to come roarin' 'round the bend.
I got a new suit of clothes a pretty red rose
And a woman I can call my friend...

7)You say you were wrong to ever leave me alone
You're sorry, you're lonesome, and scared...

8)...I should have known better
But I trusted you at first.
I should have known better
But I got what I deserved...

9)...What the hell were all reasons
For holding on for such dear life
Here's where I let go...

10)...When I''m stuck with a day that's grey and lonely
I just stick out my chin, and grin, and say...

OK, now the answers from Part II.

1. Tom Petty -- Feel a Whole Lot Better.
2. Scandal -- Goodbye to You.
3. Lorrie Morgan -- Watch Me.
4. Thelma Houston -- Don't Leave Me This Way. I love this song and the remake by the guy from Erasure ain't bad.
5. Dixie Chicks -- You Were Mine.
6. Meatloaf -- Two Out of Three Ain't Bad. After listening to a number of candidates, I've decided that Bat Out of Hell is the best album for cruising in the Mustang. For now.
7. Doug Stone -- Why Didn't I Think of That.
8. Willie Nelson -- Last Thing I Needed First Thing This Morning.
9. George Jones -- She Thinks I Still Care. I actually first got into this off the Swingers soundtrack.
10. Aerosmith -- Cryin'. Pet peeve time. The Superbowl is, quite possibly, the quintessential American event (not necessarily a good thing, but it's true). Why was the half-time show a bunch of Brits who probably think footballs are round? If you need aging rockers, there are plenty of American bands. Even if you have to use them twice.

I just had to turn the heat on in my apartment for the first time in weeks. Wherever you are, I hope you're warm.

Lost Lyrics of Love, Part II

How you feel...when you are breaking up.

Obviously, this can feel great, bad, or weird. So there's a little of each with these songs. I'm going to hold the answers until tomorrow, and see if any of you will comment with your answers. Here we go.

1)...Now I got to say, that it's not like before
And I'm not gonna play, you're game any more
After what you did, I can't stay on...

2)...Now, could I have loved someone like the one I see in you
Yeah, I remember the good times baby now, and the bad times too...

3)...You keep telling me that it can't be done
That the world is colder without someone
Yeah, it might get lonely
It might get crazy
But this time baby, i'm as good as gone...

4)...You started this fire down in my soul
Now can't you see it's burning out of control...

5)...He's two and she's four, and you know they adore you
so how can I tell them you've changed your mind...

6)...I want you, I need you
But there ain't no way I'm ever going to love you...

7)...Ooh, I've been watching
every move that he makes.
Ooh, I've been thinking
it could have been different somehow,
If I'd known what I know now...

8)...And this morning at breakfast
I spilled all the coffee
And I opened the door on my knee...

9)...Just because I haunt the same old places
Where the mem'ry of her lingers ev'rywhere
Just because I'm not the happy guy I used to be...

10)...Now the word out on the street, is the devil's in your kiss
If our love goes up in flames, it's a fire I can't resist...

Good luck. Feel free to send me your answers as comments. I'll mention any who get them all right. I'll post the answers tomorrow (I hope).

Lost Lyrics of Love, Part I

I spent a lot of time in my rental car during this most recent, and sudden, trip back to PA. While listening to the radio, I got the idea for this post. It joins three of the driving forces in my life: (1) bitterness at Valentine's Day and relationships (specifically my lack thereof); (2) my knowledge of song lyrics; (3) and trivia quizzes.

I was just going to do 10 songs, but I thought of too many, so I'm going to do thirtysomething. I'm breaking it down into three categories, based on how you feel when you:

-- Don't Have Someone
-- Are Breaking Up
-- Are Getting Over It

I'm going to give you a lyric -- try to guess the song and artist. Here's a few examples that didn't fully fit any category -- don't scroll too far.

1)Kept some letters by his bed
Dated nineteen sixty-two
He had underlined in red
Every single "I love you"

2) All those nights I sat alone
Staring at the telephone
Wondering if you're ever coming home

3) The Mississippi's mighty
But it starts in Minnesota
At a place that you could walk across
with five steps down

Here are the answers:

1. George Jones -- He Stopped Loving Her Today. A bit of a downer since "today" is the day he dies, but a great song and a hell of a statement about love.
2. Laura Brannigan -- Solitaire. The whole break-up process, from "I'm fucked up over you" to "fuck you". All of my roommates are used to this song.
3. Indigo Girls -- Ghost. Can't tell if it should be used at a wedding, divorce, or funeral, but it's a beautiful song.

Got the idea now? I promised myself I would do the first installment before I went to bed to get it in on Valentine's Day. Unfortunately, my plane was late due to strong winds over the Rockies. I'm too late for SF, but I think I'm still starting under the wire for anyone reading in Hawaii. For this set, I'll put the songs and artists at the end of the post (occasionally with editorial comments). Next time, I may wait a post to let you send your guesses. Given that I was driving around central PA, just accept that it's a little country heavy. Here we go.

1) You love her , but she loves him
And he loves somebody else, you just can't win...

2)...I don't wanna touch you too much baby
'Cos making love to you might drive me crazy...

3)...I called the house but no one answered,
For the last two weeks no one's been home,
I guess she's through with me,
to tell the truth I just can't see
What's kept the woman holding on this long...

4)...It's a fool's game, nothing but a fool's game
Standing in the cold rain, feeling like a clown...

5)...Tonight she's only sipping white wine
She's happy and fun loving most of the time...

Now a double play from one artist
6a)...I keep waiting for you to forgive me
and you keep saying you can't even start...

6b)...Exhuming things that's better left alone
I'm resurrecting memories of a love that's dead and gone...

7)...Don't know that I will, but until I can find me
a girl who'll stay and won't play games behind me
I'll stay what I am...

8)...I've got your memory, or has it got me?
I really don't know, but I know it won't let me be...

9)...It’s quarter to three,
There’s no one in the place ’cept you and me...

10)...But I'll die as I stand here today, knowing that deep in my heart
They'll fall to ruin one day, for making us part...

OK

Scroll slowly

Here are the answers

1. J. Giles Band -- Love Stinks.
2. Def Leppard -- Love Bites.
3. Garth Brooks -- Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old). Love the parentheticals.
4. Bonnie Tyler -- It's a Heartache. And you thought she only did Total Eclipse of the Heart.
5. John Anderson -- Straight Tequila Night. If you got this one, you're a country fan. Accept it. If you've never heard it -- find it. It's a great song.
6. Randy Travis -- a) Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart; b) Diggin' Up Bones. I know of no other song using the word exhuming. He has about 10 more that could work for these categories.
7. Neil Diamond -- Solitary Man.
8. Patsy Cline -- She's Got You. A beautiful voice that left too soon.
9. Frank Sinatra -- One For My Baby (and One for the Road). More parentheticals by someone else who could fill this category by himself.
10. The Pretenders -- Back on the Chain Gang. This one always makes me think of things that, regrettably, just can't be. Especially the lines before the ones I gave. (Y'all know who you are.)

Alright. I hope someone other than me enjoys that. There are probably a lot of typos and arguably written (or wrong) lyrics in this post, but It's 3 AM...I must be lonely (Matchbox 20). Actually, it's 3 AM and I'm going to bed. Hopefully, we'll do the Break-up/Leaving/Fuck-you songs tomorrow.

Valentine's Day

I'm back in Erie, blogging from my Mom's computer. This will be short, because we're headed to the fabric store -- Mom's going to make me curtains if we find something good.

Naturally, the one year I have someone I might have taken out for tonight, I will be spending Valentine's day in airports. I'll be writing more on that later, I hope.

Anyway, for those of you with someone - especially in a relationship that your family, church, or government won't recognize -- Happy Valentine's Day!

For those of you without anyone -- Where's the "I hate this damn holiday" party? I'll be back in SF by midnight.
